Bamboo Nursery

Cold Hardy Tropicals

I love bamboo - in fact I just love plants in general. Some of my favorites are "cold hardy tropicals". These are plants that normally grow in tropical areas but can survive our cold winters and come back in the spring.

Alocasia plumbea, Alocasia odora, and Alocasia wentii. The A.plumbea has metallic looking leaves with copper colored backs. The A.odora is probably the largest elephant ear I grow. This one got to about 10 feet this year but has reached 12 feet in the past with leaves over 4 feet long. The cute little girl on the end is standing next to Alocasia wentii. This is one of my favorites. The leaves are a beautiful shiny maroon color on back.

Alocasia wentii, Banana canna, Canna Bengal Tiger. The first picture is a close-up of A. wentii from the back. Notice how the sunlight makes the veins almost glow. Next is Banana Canna which gets 8 to 10 feet tall. It has small, insignificant flowers. On the right is Bengal Tiger Canna. This has the best variated leaves with beautiful orange throated, yellow flowers.

Colocasis "Black Magic", close up of stems of Colocasia "Chicago Harlequin" and on the end, Colocasia "Cranberry Stem". The Black Magic is a bluish-black that comes very close to true black if given lots of sun. The Chicago Harlequin has beautifully variegated stems. I really like the crinkly leaves of Cranberry Stem. They have a soft, velvety look on the leaf face.

The first picture here is Colocasia "Ruffles". It looks like the classic Elephant Ear but has ruffled edges on the leaves. The little Elephant Ear in the middle is Colocasia Fallax. It has a silver spot in the middle of it's leaves and only gets about 12 inches tall. On the end is Colocasia gigantea. I love this one because of the pastel green color of the leaves and stems. Notice how the leaves are very horizontal instead of vertical like the Alocasia odora.

These are both Colocasias. On the left is Hilo Beauty and on the right is C.e. Nancy's Revenge. The Hilo only gets about 3 feet tall while Nancy is bigger, maybe 4 feet. The center of the leaf turns golden yellow as bigger leaves are produced.

These are both Gingers. Hydechiums. On the left is Gold Flame and Butterfly on the right. Both smell incredible and flower for several weeks to a few months. There are lots of these.
