Sasa vetchii - Kuma zasaLarge, dark green leaves that turn white along the margins in the fall. Grows well even in the shade. This bamboo only gets to about 4 feet tall. It spreads very fast and works great at erosion control. |

This bamboo sends up new shoots and leaves in the spring that are all green. |
In the fall all the leaves turn a white/tan color around the edges. This happens over about a two week period. |

On
the left you can see old and new leaves, side by side. The most distinctive
thing about Sasa vetchii is the way the leaves change color. The leaves
on the right side of the imae are green. They are new leaves from this
spring, about six months ago. The leaves on the left side are over a year
old. They have the white boder that is so unique. At a certain tme each
fall the edges of all the new leaves begin to turn white. Within a few
weeks all the edges are changed to white, about a quarter inch wide. Kumasaza
bamboo is beautiful year round but I expecially like the way it looks
in the winter with the newly variegated leaves. |
