Bamboo Shipping Sizes |
I have taken a number
of pictures of different plants and looked at a lot
of other nursery's pictures and I've reached the conclusion you can't tell
much about the size of a plant being
shipped by looking at most pictures. My plants are all grown in either 2
, 3, and 5 gallon containers. A 2 gallon container is
about 91/2 inches in diameter, a 3 gallon container is around 10 1/2 inches
and a 5 gallon container is 11.5 inches I plant the
divisions with about8 inches of soil. Plant sizes range from about 2 to
3 feet tall for a #2 plants, 4 to 5 feet for a #3 plants, and
5 to 7 feet for a #5 plant.
The size of the rootball
is probably the most important consideration. However, top growth is what
looks good and is
an indication of a strong, healthy rhizome system. When I dig divisions
of bamboo and pot them up it is a very
subjective decision as to whether the plant will go into a 2 gallon or 3
gallon container. It's the same with any
bamboo nursery that propagates bamboo by division. The number of canes in
the division often determines the size.
However, with many of the giant species, a division often has only one cane.
In that case the size rootball I've
managed to dig and the cane size both help me decide. Once the plant is
potted, the rhizomes and
roots fill in the container. Since we pull the plants straight from the
container and prepare for shipping, the sizes
of the rootball you see below are what you get. Our smallest plant has a
nice rhizome and is plenty big enough to
start a giant grove of bamboo. Our largest shipping size is a #5. This is
a huge plant, the biggest we can ship and will
be at least 5 feet tall, usually taller.

Our plants are potted up several months before shipping. We pot bamboo divisions in containers using a sterile, professional grade potting mix. When we ship we remove the container, wrap the rootball in paper and plastic, and box them up. We do not remove any of the potting soil so when you order a 2 or 3 gallon plant you get a full size rootball. Nothing has been done to disturb the roots. Removing some soil would reduce the weight making shipping cheaper. However, there's no need to concern yourself about the cost of shipping because shipping is free at JMBAMBOO. |
