Temple Bamboo
S. fastuosa has a very unique look and is one of my favorites. The limbs don’t start until high up on the canes and are very short compared to most of the timber bamboos. I’ve heard it called “Bottle Brush” bamboo. The canes are very straight and erect. They are a dark green, turning a sort of mottled brown when they are older. The sheaths that cover the new shoot when it develops remain attached to the canes for several months once they reach full size in the spring. These have a purplish, very glossy color inside. They fold back down against the cane so you can see the shiny side so the canes look decorated for a time. The base of this bamboo can develop a slight purple color. Extremely cold hardy, it makes a good screen as the canes will grow very dense and close together. Pruning will also make it much more dense. Okuboi is closely related to this and looks very similar, only about half as tall without much color in the canes. Semiarundinara okuboi is not as cold hardy as Temple bamboo.
