Phyllostachys viridis "Robert Young"
This is one of the most striking of the giant bamboos. My mature grove has numerous culms over 4″ in diameter. Buttery yellow with ocassional green stripes, it’s just beautiful! My main grove of Robert Young Bamboo was started about 15 years ago. I rescued a truckload of plants from a grove that was being bulldozed. It has grown rampantly ever since and the grove that now lines our driveway always brings a smile to people’s faces. The first question from visitors is almost always “What’s that big yellow bamboo beside the driveway?” This bamboo has good quality timber, with slightly curvy canes. I spotted a large grove out in the “country” a while back and intended going back to look it over. Now I can’t remember exactly where it was! Our local (Birmingham) botanical gardens has a really nice grove of Robert Young bamboo.
