Black bamboo
Phyllostachys nigra
These are 4 to 5 feet tall, most have one to two canes. They have been potted up for almost a year and have a good root and rhizome system, ready to send up some nice shoots in the spring. While supplies last. One of my most popular bamboos. The canes start out green and over several months they turn dark black. During the process of turning the canes have a beautiful, green and black mottled appearance. This bamboo seems to vary greatly in size depending on where it’s planted. I have a grove beside my pond with 2 inch canes while another grove at the top of a hill in poor soil has no canes over about an inch in diameter. They are the same black bamboo clone and planted about the same time, roughly 10 years ago. The Birmingham Botanical Gardens has a couple of groves of Black bamboo with nice, big canes. I’ve found a few groves around the city and have planted several groves at friends’ and relatives’ houses.
