Bamboo Nursery

Phyllostachys vivax 'Aureocaulis' - Greenstripe Vivax

Vivax bamboo is the second largest of the cold hardy bamboos. This cultivar should obtain the same size but has beautiful, buttery yellow culms with ocassional green stripes. This bamboo is sometimes difficult to obtain as it is a somewhat recent introduction. I planted this bamboo near my nursery, intending to move it after a year or so. Seven years later I've waited too long! I have begun to move some of the large canes this year (2007) to an area prepared just for this grove. So far I've moved about 8 large, field specimen size plants with 24 inch rootballs and culms about 20 feet tall (after pruning).

P.v.aureocaulisThis is a two year old culm, about 1 inch in diameter. Greenstripe Bamboo culmNew culm, about 2 inches in diameter.

This is my largest culm of Green Stripe Vivax this year, almost 3 inches in diameter. This bamboo has the potential to be one of my favorites! I've never seen a mature grove of P.v.aureocaulis. I can't wait for this grove to have some nice, 5 inch culms. It will be very impressive.
