Sweetshoot has the prettiest shoots of any Phyllostachys (IMHO) |
A ten year old grove of P.dulcis |
Same grove |
| I have a lot of "favorites" but this bamboo is near the top of the list. However, my grove is planted in extremely poor soil, full of rock. It also receives a lot of run-off from the driveway washing away leaves and soil. In the first several years I babied this gove. I gave it more than it's share of composted horse manure, fertilizer, and a heavy mulch, each year. The bamboo responded and rewarded me with lots of big, fat shoots that matued into beautiful, sinuous canes. Over the last couple of years I've kind of let it go The result was fewer new culms last year and even less this year. I've promised myself that the grove will receive a good layer of manure this summer and I'll put down a heavy leaf mulch in the fall. |

Sweetshoot bamboo is one of the giants and has these beautiful, sinuous canes. Nothing else looks quite like P. dulcis. |
