Phyllostachys bambusoidesJapanese Timber Bamboo. This bamboo has very thick walls makeing it one of the best bamboo species for timber. This is a true giant, reaching up to 60+ feet in heigth and 5 or more inches in diameter. The traditional Shakuhachi flute is made from the base of this bamboo. Not as cold hardy as some, this bamboo probably will not thrive in areas colder than zone 7. We have many mature Madake groves in our area with big 4 and 5 inch canes.. |

Thes pictures of new shoots of P.bambusoides show the crinkly hairs called oral setae that appear on this species. |
| I keep finding more groves of P.bambusoides in our area. I thought many of these were Vivax but almost all have proven to be Japanese Timber Bamboo. One of the largest groves was recently cut to the ground. I know the lady who owns it and she just wants to control it. I told her what to expect. I drive by every chance I get and have to laugh over the dozens and dozens of new shoots coming up. I advised the owner to have a back-hoe come in and dig out all the roots. However, it is on two other properties, once of which belongs to the city. I think the bamboo will be there for a long time. |
