Latest news at Jmbamboo

Seems all I've done for the past 2 months is dig bamboo. This is the time of year when I must get my bamboo plants re-stocked and I must say it's been one of the best because it has rained 2 days out of three for the past month and a half. This means the ground is nice and soft and 99.9% of the bamboo I dig survives the transplant. It also means I haven't had to water the new plants at all. August and September are usually very hot and dry here in Alabamba so it's been quite a change from usual. I've dug hundreds of Yellow Groove bamboo plants (my best seller) as well as Golden and Red Margin. Black bamboo and giant Moso are always in high demand and I nearly always sell out. Over the years I've been planting Moso bamboo and Black bamboo in lots of locations. It has really paid off and this year I've dug more Black and Moso than ever before. Hopefully I can meet the demand this year. Along with these bamboos some others I've been digging include
Giant Gray Henon
Okuboi
Giant Leaf Bamboo
Sasa palmata
Sasa vetchii
Incense bamboo
Many groundcover bamboos
.... well you get the idea. My daughter-in-law helps me with the potting and I've really kept her busy this year. I know she's as tired of potting bamboo as I am but it's nice to get it done before the cold weather gets here. I picked up a couple hundred plants from her place today and my 2 year old grandson says "I potted these". I'm sure he was a big help!

Current projects here at Jmbamboo

Building a barn at Jmbamboo Bamboo Nursery. We need more room to store boxes, pack bamboo, and enjoy our hobbies.

We hope to have a blacksmith shop installed by winter. The equipment includes a large hydraulic press, an automatic hammer, the forge and anvil along with steel tables, grinders, vises, etc. Most of the large hydraulic and electric tools were built by Larry (my late brother-in-law.) The electric equipment is all 3 phase but we have a converter and one of the son-in-laws ia an electrician who likes blacksmithing. Mickey and I learned some basic blacksmithing skills and hope to learn more once we get the shop set up. I've put up some images on this page.

After we finally finished our wireless network here at the bamboo nursery we were left with a tall, steel pole that looked kind of ugly. We discussed ways to hide the pole and after some experimetation and some mild arguments we hit on an idea we both liked. I cut several large bamboo poles and we simply tied them around the steel pole. We think it looks fine and since they are sitting on rocks (instead of the ground) they should last several years. This picture was taken in the spring and since that time a vine we planted has grown around and up the bamboo poles. This gave the bamboo a nice look and we are quite pleased. The network has been working fine all summer with very little outage. Much better than I expected and I love surfing the web at broadband speed rather than dial-up!

Building a bamboo biadark.

Full size landscaping plants available. Most are 15 gallon with multiple canes. Most popular species available in this size with heights of 10 to 20 feet, depending on species and container. With a new season coming up we've stocked up on more giant bamboo, black bamboo, and screening bamboo.
